Welcome to Motion to Adjourn, the podcast about the work that continues with the Birmingham City Council beyond what happens on Tuesdays during council meeting. All in favor, let it be known by saying aye or in the committee meeting. After the official motion to adjourn, the council's continue work on behalf of the city and its residents. Welcome to the Motion to Adjourn podcast. I am your host, Anaya Kenyan, a service project manager for the Birmingham City Council. Today we're diving into some of the most significant items that were mentioned during Tuesday's council meeting. On Tuesday, the council approved resolutions appointing three new members to the Birmingham Planning Commission, two with terms expiring October 6, 2026, and one with the term extending to October 6, 2029. The council also appointed a representative to the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham Board of Directors to fill an unexpired term ending May 31st, 2027. The Birmingham Planning Commission plays a key role in guiding the city's physical development from land use planning to transportation and community facilities, ensuring growth aligns with Birmingham's long-term vision. Likewise, the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham Board provides critical regional guidance on development initiatives across the metro area. These appointments help strengthen both bodies as they continue shaping the future of our communities. On Tuesday, the council approved a resolution accepting the lump sum bid from Southeastern Seal Coating Incorporated of Birmingham to repair stormwater runoff along Montclair Road adjacent to Ramsey Park. This work is a key component of the Ramsey Park Drainage Improvements Project. Here's Councillor Hunna Williams sharing how this effort will enhance safety and walkability for nearby residents.

We know right there at that park, when it rains, it it really does become a problem, not only for the park and those that use the park, but also when it keeps eroding at that roadway, it becomes unsafe for motorists as well. So we're excited. This has been a project that we have uh that's been in planning for a long time, and so happy that we finally got that funding passed today.

This project marks an important step toward improving neighborhood infrastructure and ensuring that our parks and surrounding areas are safer and more accessible for everyone. The council approved a resolution to set a public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would adjust zone district boundaries for all properties within the Southern Area Framework Plan, including areas in the Crestline, Crestwood, and Red Mountain communities. Here's Councillor Josh Vasa, co-chair of the Planning and Zoning Committee, with more on what this means for residents.

SPEAKER_00

The planning, engineering, and permitting department has worked uh very hard the last two or three years on the framework plans throughout the city. The Southern Framework Plan is the last of these to be approved by the council. Um each of these framework plans has gone through a rigorous process of community feedback. Um more of community feedback, additional community feedback. Uh, and then once that process moves forward, it goes to planning and zoning committee. Uh, and then after that, goes on to a public hearing at the council.

The public hearing will take place during the August 18th City Council meeting in the council chambers on the third floor of City Hall. Don't miss next week's episode. Council President Pro Tem Latanya Tate sits down with Deborah Daniels from the Offender Alumni Association and William Barnes from the Urban League.

SPEAKER_02

How can residents, local business, community partners, and how can people connect and support your organizations and get involved in doing this work? Like, how can people get involved, Deb and William Howe? Well, tell a people how.
